Job asked:

Brewing virgin here looking to make some homemade beer for the first time. It seems so intimidating that I don’t know where to start. Should I get a kit, and if so, which one? Or am I better off just buying all the supplies and ingredients separately?

My Brothers have both used MR Beer and it works quite well. It comes with yeast and hoppes and everything else you need, plus easy to read instructions and the beer is great.

Mr. Beer is really great for first timers, it comes with all the instructions, everything you need for brewing and the bottles for storage. It comes in different styles which are pretty cool. Just remember, for good beer you need a lot of patience, it takes a least two weeks to brew.

my first “kit” was the 6 gallon bucket and a beer kit. Mr. Brew is ok but can be better with a little modification of the recipe’s.

number one rule… sanitation. Keep EVERYTHING sanitized.

Mr Beer has horrible malt extracts.

But, they’re cheap.

I’d look at this first, however:

Five gallons is what most homebrewers do at a time, so this is a good kit if you want to find recipes online, and not get locked into a certain producer’s product line.

Do not, not, not start with a toy kit, like Mr Beer. You are going to want to advance to a real equipment kit almost immediately, so you may as well start there. I started with Brewer’s Best, but there are other brands just as good. Your first step is to learn what you need. Papazian wrote The New Complete Guide to Home Brewing. Read the first 42 pages to get the background you need, then list the equipment you will have to buy. Then, find a recipe for an all-extract ale. Add the ingredients to your list. Now, go to and click on the resource guide button to get links to catalogs. Figure out the best deal. You may be able to get free shipping. Order. Wait. Brew. Wait. Bottle. Wait. Drink. Plot your next brew. Repeat.
